One location in the Bronx, New York is supposedly only allowing people 18 years or older to enter the store.
TikTok user @cooliebenz posted about the concerning rule, recording a sign that was taped to the storefront.
“All guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at this Target store,” read the sign.
The user said in the video that employees are checking IDs as customers come in.
“They done closed self-checkout,” she said. “You have to purchase makeup in the makeup section and they have the whole thing railed off so you can’t even sneak out.”
In the clip, the makeup and beauty section appeared to be cordoned off.
Lastly, even after making a purchase, employees also check the receipts of all customers as they exit.
Many stores have beefed up security in the wake of rising retail crime but viewers were still shocked to see the lengths the store went to.
“Are you in Gotham city,” joked one user.
“And Target has started its downfall,” wrote another user.
“ID check at Target is INSANE,” wrote a third user. “Am I going into the club??? I never take my wallet to Target just Apple Pay and vibes.”
However, others felt that this was the only way for the store to fight against theft and called for more stores to follow suit.
“As someone who used to work in Target, ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME,” wrote one viewer.
“The amount of times little a** kids would steal and destroy stuff…”
Another user wrote: “Good for them. These losers running wild and stealing. That Target has 3 cops so it’s bad. Parents need to control their children & the adults…”
“I was with my child in a Target where kids were throwing things over the aisles and stealing,” wrote another user. “So I don’t blame them.”
The U.S. Sun has reached out to Target for comment.
